This new English language setting of the All-Night Vigil was composed from November 2020 until June 2021 During the latter half of the Covid pandemic when most of the faithful were in absentia from the Divine Liturgy, and at best experiencing virtual services from their homes. Unlike its liturgical predecessor the Simple Divine Liturgy, which was written in a homophonic style, this service music incorporates traditional 19th century Russian choral textures with the added beauty of polyphonic elements in the harmonic framework of Western tonalities. The order of the service for the vespers and Matins, including text and translation follows the ‘Red’ Vespers and ‘Black’ Matins paperback service books published by St Tikhon's Monastery seminary press.
